Artist Statement

"Indian Summer" by Nancy Thomas

The idea for this piece came after seeing unforgettable landscapes in Southern Utah where beautiful skies meet endless canyons.  As I imagined a composition, sketched and created an underpainting, the central blue area became a bridge between the vibrant cloud reflections of a setting sun and the opposing darkly shadowed canyons below.  At the end I opened the foreground with a passage for the viewer which also brought light into the foreground so contrasts could play against one another.  Lastly, I deepened the blues of the top left to remind us of an approaching nightfall.
