Artist Statement

"Colorful Canopy" by Nancy Wahl

Fall is perhaps my favorite time of year. Even the most mundane roadside area can become spectacular in a blink of the eye. This scene was along Highway 64 near Cashiers NC. The late afternoon sun was peeking through the trees and the colors were breathtaking. It was a moment that begged to be painted. The piece was done on sanded Uart 400 with an alcohol wash underpainting.

"Evening Glory" by Nancy Wahl

I have waited years to attempt to paint this photograph. It has been tucked in that favorite file while I waited for courage. I snapped this scene late one afternoon while walking the dogs. We had started later than usual and as we headed home the landscape became a show of vivid colors and subtle shadows. Although the pups were not as impressed as I, they waited patiently as I enjoyed the brief show hoping to store all the nuances in my memory. The piece was done on sanded Uart 400 with an alcohol wash underpainting.
