Artist Statement

"Woman With Gold Earring" by Barbara Kitty Williams

This stunning young lady arrived at an event I was attending and showed a particular gaze that engaged me.  I asked her to pose for me in my studio and this is one of other small works of her that are now privately owned.  I enjoyed the texture of her beret, hair, fur and, of course, the earring.  A more difficult aspect was that of two sources of light, a stronger backlight, and one from the side.  In the end this worked very well adding to the mystery of the piece and making it more inviting.  A variety of pastels were used such as CarbOthello, Blue Earth, and Terry Ludwig and was done on paper.
